Book of the week

Olive the cat is in a bad mood. Her bad mood gets worse, as she walks along being mean to her friends who want to play with her making her bad mood spread.

Thankfully a trip to the candy store makes her feel better, and on her way home when she finds her friends Olive can't understand why they are all so grumpy!
It is a silly story that my kids and I love. It teaches a lesson: not to make your friends mad when they’re trying to be nice to you. Our favorite part is when Olive makes all of her friends feel happy again by sharing her sweets.

So, I'm a  beauty product fanatic. Every time I see an article about "cult" products..or something that someone just "picked up" in Paris, London, etc , I feel the need to buy it, or at least store the information somehow, so one day when I actually do buy it, I will know where to get it. I also love great packaging, and if it comes in any kind of metal tin, it's mine!
This balm from Badger body care fits the bill..not necessarily cult, but it's in a tin!

The balm is used at night to help relax your little one with it's soothing scent (my son is 8 and we still use it!). Made with beeswax, spearmint, lavender among other things, you just rub a bit on the temples, neck, wrists , or nostril area. It has a nice scent, isn't really greasy and is definitely relaxing.
This and many other lovely, organic products can be purchased here.

Sweet dreams!

a little bit of Juju!

So recently on the blogosphere I've seen these Juju hats( from Cameroon) everywhere in people's homes. I think I definitely need one. I like the idea of trying to make my own though. So here are a couple of links for DIY, and some sites to buy them ready made. Which color is your favorite?

Lentil patties

I love lentils and thankfully so do my kids. As babies,  they lived on lentil puree (my youngest still does).  And now as toddlers they love these simple patties, served with homemade mayonnaise or tomato sauce.

These patties are also great for a dinner party or picnic!

Peanut butter bread..

So, being that we're American..in our house we eat peanut butter. We don't eat it on weird random things(unless you count bananas), and we don't buy it by the bucketful..but we do like it in oatmeal and on toast. I'm also not opposed to it eaten with dark chocolate. ;) So, when I saw this recipe for peanut butter bread, which is more of a cake consistency, like banana bread, I thought why not? We made it, and it's delicious, and super easy. We have already converted out neighbor children in Varese to peanut butter lovers, we almost have to hide the jar when they occasionally come over for breakfast on Sunday mornings. (We are in Milan during the week, and Varese on weekends). So here is the recipe: Thanks to cinnamon and spice and all things nice! Enjoy! Sali

Chocolate puddings with caramel sauce-budino di cioccolato!!

Here in Italy children are brought up on eating 'budino' ;  a rich and decadent yet comforting food that with its simple ingredients has become one of my favourite treats to make for our family or when friends are coming over and I am limited for time.

Using ingredients that most of us have already in our kitchen it is a simple dessert to make without a trip to the grocery. I love how rich and fulfilling chocolate budino turns out despite its

Ingredients for puddings

150g butter
180 g dark chocolate
160g caster (fine) sugar
800ml milk
80g flour

For the caramel sauce

150g caster sugar
2 teaspoons of water

1. Warm milk in a saucepan.

2. Break the chocolate into small pieces and melt in a saucepan with the butter over low heat.

3. When melted use a whisk to mix in the sugar.

4. After mixing well slowly add the flour a bit at a time until smooth.

5. Pour the boiled milk in one go into the chocolate mixture, mixing well letting it bubble until thickened (about 5 min) remove from heat.

6. Grease eight 125ml ramekin dishes, place water and sugar in a small heavy-based saucepan stirring over medium heat until sugar is dissolved.

7. Leave to simmer without stirring until a dark brown caramel forms (careful not to burn)
Working quickly coat base and sides of each ramekin dish pouring over the chocolate mixture about 3/4 full.

8.  Refrigerate for at least 3 hours until set, before serving place the ramekin dishes into boiling water for a few minutes, then use a knife inside edges to lift out the puddings onto plates.

Enjoy
